UKBCA Lecture Synopsis

Following the amazing success of the first
United Kingdom Biomechanics Coaches Association conference recently, we have written a brief synopsis of each lecture. Please read below for more details.....

UKBCA Conference Lectures

Lecture title: Regress to progress
Biomechanics Coaches are constantly asking about how they communicate the fact that they often have to tell their clients to avoid certain exercises after their initial biomechanical screen, based upon their results and the fact that their clients are often deeply in the Normalise phase.

Rachel France (Master Biomechanics Coach) took the group through the reasons why we often need to regress their training and suggested that explaining to the client the evolutionary process and how recent lifestyle factors have caused many of our intrinsic biomechanical problems can be effective. She then discussed ways of communicating and ‘selling in’ the fact of regression by understanding clients natural learning and listening styles, from evidence based teaching methods. After an initial theoretical presentation of the model, the large group broke into 3 to discuss and the debate scenarios that Rachel set and then they returned together to present their findings and discuss outcomes.

Lecture title: Top 3 screens
Biomechanics Coaches are excellent exercise prescribers by virtue of their knowledge of the biomechanical screening process, the outcomes and the results they get. Part of this is their understanding of the importance and relevance of the screening methods they use.

Jo Rainsley (Master Biomechanics Coach) took the group through 3 screens and described the techniques of the tests. She then broke the large group into breakout groups.  Each group took a screen and discussed the detail of the technique and also looked into ways of using the screens to differentiate between similar screens and how they could work for different populations. The groups then came together to discuss and challenge the tests to help facilitate a better understanding of the reasons behind them.

Lecture title: Muscle spasm
A key exercise technique used by Biomechanics Coaches is anti-spasm exercises also known as muscle release work. This is based upon evidence from a number of researchers and clinicians.

Mike Grice (Master Biomechanics Coach) gave us a guided tour around the research, relevant evidence and put some detail into the different methods that can be used to release muscle spasm. The group then broke into smaller focus groups to practically work on some manual techniques that Biomechanics Coaches would find useful as part of their repertoire.

Lecture title: Practical case study
The most important factors in Biomechanics Coaching are the ability to deliver and explain the screens accurately, clearly and in a timely manner, and then to prescribe the most appropriate exercises for the client for best results.

Martin Haines (Master Biomechanics Coach) took us through a live screening session with a client to demonstrate the correct screening techniques, how the results were presented to the client using appropriate language and then described the best exercises for that client. The group then discussed the outcomes and possible interpretations of those outcomes to delve deeper into the nuances of high level Biomechanics Coaching.

Lecture title: Branding and Marketing – how it can help your business and the UKBCA
It’s one thing to be a great Biomechanics Coach, but it’s quite another to create a successful business. Mel Berry from Very Berry Marketing and Branding consultants looked at how the UKBCA and every Biomechanics Coach can be providing a consistent message to their clients in terms of service, product and brand for the collective good.

After an up-front discussion on this the large group broke out to discuss these ideas and look at how they were marketing and branding their business to see if there were any other ideas generated by the group that could help them and the UKBCA. She also presented marketing work to the group that included flyers, pop up stand design, stationary design etc, so the UKBCA and the individual members could benefit from the consistent brand message for the collective good.

The UKBCA Conference 2010 was a great success!  Visit our UKBCA Conference page to see Martin Haines' comments from the day.
